CSC Ensures Drug Security, QualityMercy’s Consolidated Services Centers (CSC) in Springfield is up and running as the pharmaceutical purchasing, packing and distribution center for System facilities. Approximately 2,500 pharmaceuticals are currently stocked in the CSC, many of which are repackaged and bar–coded in unit–dose packages for distribution to Mercy’s hospitals. To package and distribute drugs, Mercy completed arduous licensing and qualification procedures by federal and state agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration and various state boards. “Ensuring proper controls were in place wasn’t just a matter of getting licensed and meeting qualifications. It was going beyond the requirements, beyond what even drug Wholesalers are doing, to demonstrate that we could provide a quality operation.” said Lori Wright, ROi director of quality assurance and regulatory affairs. Security and quality are key components of the CSC’s pharmacy operation. About $5 million in drug inventory is protected by an advanced security system at the CSC, including 16 cameras, motion detectors and electric beams, and a vault area for controlled substances. Quality measures include rigorous procedures to ensure cleanliness and accuracy of the drug repackaging and distribution processes. With all of these quality controls in place, repackaged medications still must pass a final inspection by a pharmacist prior to distributions to a Mercy facility. According to Mike McCurry, ROi vice president/ chief operations officers, the CSC is the only healthcare provider site in the country where repackaging and distribution occurs in such a highly disciplined manner. We’ve gone to extraordinary lengths to provide a quality operation,” McCurry said. |
